VOLUNTEER Q&A

Meet Matt

Why did you get involved with Special Olympics Australia? After volunteering with junior football clubs for 10 years, I was looking for another way to contribute to our community. I had been involved in Special Olympics events, including the Law Enforcement Torch Run and always came away with a sense of joy, so it was an easy choice to get involved.

What is your favourite sport? I have a soft spot for basketball, but more recently I’ve taken a keen interest in bocce.

How has Special Olympics Australia impacted your life? Special Olympics has shown me the importance of providing sporting opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Special Olympics athletes have been significant role models for me as they are some of the greatest teachers of tolerance. Throughout their lives, nearly all have been marginalised, excluded, disrespected and discriminated against. Yet, they have a positive ‘can-do’ attitude that we could all learn a valuable lesson from.

What difference does Special Olympics Australia make on families? Special Olympics Australia makes a difference in so many ways. It always astounds me how much athletes, and their families, grow in confidence through sport and connection.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering for Special Olympics Australia? Do it! I never imagined the satisfaction I would get from being involved with such a great group of people.

Matt is President & Torch Run Director at Law Enforcement Torch Run (Victoria)
